Exploring Mars

Day 2
Today was the most terrible day of my expedition. I saw Mac's ship in the distance and ran over but when I got there I found that his ship had crashed and he hadn't survived the fall. I heard this strange noise and to my surprise it was Mona the monkey that was sent up with Mac.

Exploring Mars

Day 1
Commander Courtney reporting from the mars probe,22nd June 1970. This day began with a disaster.Mac and I had to take evasive action to avoid a meteorite. In firing the retro-rockets to avoid the meteorite, we came inyo the orbit of Mars. We used all the fuel and had to eject both modules. I landed on the far side of Mars, Mac on the other side.I'll set off to look for him tomorrow. My first survival problem will be heat.I found a yellow rock that has the properties of coal. The problem that most concerns me is air. I have only 60 hours of air left in my tanks. I realized that I can't make fire without oxygen so I used my oxygen tank pipe to help me make the fire. I found a crystal on the ground and used it as a magnifing glass on the rock to make fire.

When my group made our super brick we had a list of ingredients and we thought that we would make a graph about it.

Super Brick

Super Bricks

Making super bricks was a science experiment that was used to measure how high the brick could get by droping it on the concrete without it breaking. Every group used different ingredients. Some of the ingredients that were supplied were
· Sand
· Cement
· Water
· Clay
· Plaster of Paris
· Flour

Before we made the super bricks as a class we made one simple brick only out of Plaster of Paris. My group (Ladybeetles) used gloves so that we didn’t get any of the mixture on our hands. The first thing that we did was put in 3ml of sand, 7ml of dry cement, 3.5ml of water, 5ml of clay, 4ml of Plaster of Paris. Then we took turns in mixing the ingredients together and once they were mixed in we scooped the mixture into a cardboard matchbox. We let them dry in the sun for two days and three days later we did a drop test to see how strong they were.

We thought that the aim of this experiment would be to try and make the super brick stronger then the Plaster of Paris brick and to see what ingredients would make the brick stronger. Some groups figured out that some of ingredients that they used made the brick better or worse. The Plaster of Paris brick broke at 160cm and my group’s brick broke at 200cm (2 metres).

On the holidays

On the holidays my family went up the coast. Our school gets 2 weeks holidays.I also went camping on Morton Island but unfortunantly i didn't catch a fish.We saw whales, dolphins and turtles but luckily no sharks. It was only my mum that went over apart from my grandparents and my cousins. My mum and I shared a tent.We only went over for 4 days but it was really fun.

Our Visitors from Canossa

Yesterday a class from Canossa Primary School, Ingham,Trebonne payed us a visit. We learnt about working and living in the country. This was a spectacular experience because our lifestyles are very different.Later in the afternoon they showed us a slideshow/powerpoint.On the powerpoint there were pictures of their homes and their school. In their whole school they only have 25 kids and they only have 2 classes. One of them is called Conte which is preps, ones, twos and threes and the fours, fives, sixes and sevens are called O'Meara.Out of the 13 people who came to our school there was 4 who were in my class for the day.Their names were Sarah(year 4),Aiden(year 5),Gerri(year 5),Sharon(year 4). There is only 4 staff members.Mrs Sartor who is the secretary,Mrs Lynch who is the principal,Mrs Kemp who is the O'Meara teacher and Miss Lucy who is the Conte teacher.

Newcombe Ball

Newcombe ball is a game that is played with as many people as you want but only 12 people can be on each side at a time until there is a rotation. There are numbers on lines all over the field from number 1-12.Any spare players are the substitutes and wait for a rotation to move on to the court one by one.The player who is number 1 serves the ball over the net to the other side. The ball is not allowed to touch the net on a serve but is allowed to when your just passing it over. Some of the rules for newcombe are....

  • The ball has to go over the net.
  • You have to be in the 1st row out of the 3 to pass the ball over.
  • You only have 3 passes to get it to the front.
  • You can only have the ball on your side for 3 seconds. If you pass the ball over the net and it touches the ground before the opposing team can get it then your team gets 1 point.

To get a point you have to pass the ball over the net without it going out.You can stop the game whenever you want but to win you have to be beating the other team by 2 points. If your team serves the ball and make a mistake then rotates so number 1 goes to 2 and number 2 goes to 3 but if you have spare players instead of number 12 going back to number1 it goes off as a spare player and then one of the spare players goes to number 1.Then the other team serve but if they make a mistake then your team rotates but if your team makes a mistake or misses the ball on the other teams serve then they get 1 point.

The aim of the game is to win a point by playing by the rules. Some good tactics are to be able to catch the ball and throw the ball over the net onto the other side.

My bean day 12

This is what my bean looked like on day 8.Nearly everyone's beans had grown very tall and we had to cut the plastic bags that they were in.
