Super Bricks
Making super bricks was a science experiment that was used to measure how high the brick could get by droping it on the concrete without it breaking. Every group used different ingredients. Some of the ingredients that were supplied were
· Sand
· Cement
· Water
· Clay
· Plaster of Paris
· Flour
Before we made the super bricks as a class we made one simple brick only out of Plaster of Paris. My group (Ladybeetles) used gloves so that we didn’t get any of the mixture on our hands. The first thing that we did was put in 3ml of sand, 7ml of dry cement, 3.5ml of water, 5ml of clay, 4ml of Plaster of Paris. Then we took turns in mixing the ingredients together and once they were mixed in we scooped the mixture into a cardboard matchbox. We let them dry in the sun for two days and three days later we did a drop test to see how strong they were.
We thought that the aim of this experiment would be to try and make the super brick stronger then the Plaster of Paris brick and to see what ingredients would make the brick stronger. Some groups figured out that some of ingredients that they used made the brick better or worse. The Plaster of Paris brick broke at 160cm and my group’s brick broke at 200cm (2 metres).
